When Pride Meets Its Match | Pastor Christopher Coats | Island Christian Church
• Series: Domino Effect
In 1 Samuel 25, we encounter three leaders—David, Nabal, and Abigail—each revealing different lessons in character and leadership. David, though usually a man after God’s own heart, reacts in anger when insulted by the foolish and arrogant Nabal. His overreaction nearly leads to bloodshed. Nabal, for his part, exemplifies failed leadership—prideful, dismissive, and unteachable. No one could even reason with him. Into this dangerous moment steps Abigail, Nabal’s wise and courageous wife. She acts quickly, humbly, and redemptively, stopping David from avenging himself and reminding him of his God-given calling. This story challenges us to consider how we respond under pressure: Will we let pride lead us like Nabal? Will we lash out in anger like David? Or will we lead with wisdom like Abigail? Ultimately, we are reminded of Jesus, who didn’t retaliate when insulted, but entrusted Himself to the Father. Godly leadership doesn’t demand respect—it rests in God’s grace and acts with courage and humility, even in crisis.
