When Courage Leads First | Pastor Chris Coats | Island Christian Church
• Series: Domino Effect
This week, we explore how biblical courage is not about reckless bravery but about faith-filled obedience, even when outcomes are uncertain. Joshua's leadership journey—from planning to stepping into the unknown, and ultimately battling formidable challenges—demonstrates that courage precedes clarity and victory. In the planning phase, God commands Joshua to meditate on His Word and promises His unwavering presence (Joshua 1:1–9). This underscores that true courage stems from trusting God's guidance over our own understanding. The stepping phase highlights the priests' act of faith as they step into the flooding Jordan River, leading to a miraculous parting of the waters (Joshua 3:13–17). This teaches that obedience often requires action before confirmation. During the battles, unconventional strategies like marching around Jericho's walls (Joshua 6) and confronting hidden sin at Ai (Joshua 7) reveal that victory comes through obedience and dependence on God, not human strength. Ultimately, Joshua's story points to Jesus—the greater Joshua—who leads us into eternal rest through His own courage and sacrifice (Hebrews 4:8–9). Jesus faced the ultimate battle against sin and death, securing victory for all who follow Him. This weeky, we should identify our current season—planning, stepping, or battling—and to take one courageous step of obedience, trusting in God's presence and promises.
