• Series: Into The Wilderness
The book of Exodus ends with the tabernacle completed and the glory of the Lord filling it, yet the people—including Moses—are unable to enter. This sets up the need for Leviticus, which provides a way for sinful people to approach a holy God. Leviticus can seem like a book of rules and regulations, but it holds deep meaning, pointing forward to Christ. The Old Testament laws fall into three categories: Ceremonial (how to worship), Judicial (how Israel was governed), and Moral (God’s unchanging standard for right living). Jesus fulfilled the ceremonial and judicial laws, but the moral law still stands today. Jesus clarified the law’s true meaning in the Sermon on the Mount, showing that righteousness goes beyond outward obedience to the heart’s condition. He is the fulfillment of the law (Matthew 5:17, Romans 10:4). The five major Old Testament offerings—the burnt, grain, peace, sin, and guilt offerings—find their fulfillment in Christ’s sacrifice. Leviticus starts with Moses outside the tent, but by Numbers, he is inside, showing that God made a way. Likewise, through Jesus, we are brought near to God (1 Peter 3:18).
